Letters: The Next Kind of Integration

In 1971 and 1972 I produced a nationally distributed television documentary titled “Class . . . and the Classroom” that reported on conditions in Duluth, Minn., as the schools prepared to follow a class-desegregation mandate from the state. Duluth would have been the first school district in the nation to desegregate on class, rather than racial, lines (Emily Bazelon, July 20). The Duluth Board of Education eventually refused to comply with the state mandate, and chastened state-education officials backed down. A local TV station bought our program with the intention of keeping it off any channel in the community. Only a threat of a national exposé by Bill Greeley, who was then the radio-TV editor of the trade magazine Variety, forced the station to put it on air.
